The Pink Fairy Armadillo
The Pink Fairy Armadillo is the smallest armadillo out there. They are only 5 inches long and have a rosy pink shell with soft white fur on the belly. Unlike most armadillos, they don't rely on their shell to protect themselves but use it like a radiator. They pump blood in and out to raise or lower their core temperature. They almost spend their entire life underground hunting invertebrates and plant matter. They are extremely rare. Conservation biologist Mariella Superina of Argentina’s National Scientific and Technical Research Council has been studying other armadillos in the pink fairy’s habitat for more than 10 years and has never once seen one in the wild. She has only seen them is they are brought in because of injury or if confiscated from people who them as pets. They live in Argentina, South America in the dry grasslands and sandy plains.
